[HUB Workbench] Crash Course in WordPress- Entire Series
Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at 5:00 PM - Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 6:30 PM (PST)
San Francisco, CA
About the Series
If you want to have an awesome WordPress site, this class will help you get there. WordPress is the most popular publishing platform - in fact, over 20% of new domains registered are running their sites on WordPress.
Musicians, photographers, creatives, magazine, nonprofits, and small business owners are all running their sites on WordPress - and you can too.
After this class is done, you'll have your very own kick @$$ WordPress site, hosted on WordPress.com. We will also review how to setup WordPress on your own host, install plugins to extend its functionality, embed video, and setup photo galleries to display your work.
Here's a quick overview of the class syllabus
- Review the ecosystem of WordPress
- Review comparable solutions
- Setup a working site on WordPress.com
- Add photos and video to your About Page
- Build Contact Page
- Build Portfolio Page
- Edit sidebars
- Edit Menus
- Review next steps to launch your site
Every class will offer students an opportunity to show work in progress and get class feedback.
Requirements for all classes :
- Please setup an account with WordPress.com before class starts. Even if you already have a WordPress site setup, please also make sure you create an account with WordPress.com.
- Please bring your own computer with wifi ready to go.
- You can download the class syllabus here :
Session 1 Getting Started with WordPress- March 6th 5-7pm Enroll now
We'll go over the basics, talk about hosting, review a few popular WordPress features, and get started on creating content. We'll also discuss how WordPress differs from other systems, and what advantages there are to working with WordPress.
Session 2 Creating with WordPress- March 13th 5-7pm Enroll now
Now that you've got a WordPress site ready to go, we'll look at how you can manage your content. We'll update your menus, create new widgets (and learn what widgets are), create a gallery, and start customizing the look and feel of your site. Heck - we'll even create a contact form so people can get in touch with you.
Session 3 Customizing your WordPress site - March 20th 5-7pm Enroll now
You've got your hosting. You've got your content. Now it's time to start adjusting how your site looks. During this session, we'll look at some popular themes, and discuss the difference between customizing a theme, and creating a whole new design. You'll also get a chance to show your work in progress and get feedback from the class and instructor.
In addition to theming, we'll also review some popular plugins and start the process of configuring them.
Session 4 WordPress Strategy for Businesses - March 27th 5-7pm Enroll now
Hosting? Check. Content? Check. Layout? Check. Strategy? Check.
Now it's time to put your site in front of people. During this session, we'll look at integrating social media icons widgets into your site. We'll also review SEO strategies and talk about how people can stay engaged with your site and your organization.
Need help coordinating email newsletters, subscriptions, and reviewing content strategy? We'll cover it all in this session.
What this series is not :
It is not intended to be a general computer class. Please be comfortable using your computer, and moving files around. If you can type emails and send attachments, you'll be in good shape.
Also - because it's a group setting, we might not be able to address particular issues with themes and hosting settings. While we'll be customizing pre-built themes, we won't be creating a theme from scratch.
If you are looking for a more customized or individual approach, an individual one-on-one session might be better suited for you.
So enough about what this class is not. What this class is? An opportunity for you to kickstart your site's progress and get your WordPress site launch ready.
